Collective Voice Data Visualisation in Moray

Using data visualisation as a means to meaningful and accessible lived/living experience data with the ability to enable change.

One of the key questions of community-led research is how data and findings from lived experience can be collected and then meaningfully shared back to both communities to use, as well as to policy makers in a way that can enable change.

The importance of this question was something we learned through supporting community-led Ideas Fund research projects where we noticed a lack of data sharing and sense-making infrastructure. We continue to learn more about this topic by hosting the Community Knowledge Matters network, experimenting with developing new ways to support sharing data in a meaningful way.

Through our Co-Priority Survey, over the two years working with a community working group, we have developed a prototype of a Data Visualisation which is accessible, interactive and embeds the lived experiences and interpretation of the data. The tool will be launched in June 2026. Find out more here.

Alongside this, we have also been working as partners on the Collaboration for Mental Wealth in Moray Community Research Network to explore a Moray dataset of lived experience called Collective Voice. This project has a focus on how we can co-develop a more qualitative and place-based dataset which embeds CHIME and Human Rights Based approaches working with both community, third sector and statutory partners.

The collective voice context

Moray Wellbeing Hub and partners collect qualitative living/lived experience data about mental health and drugs/alcohol services and supports from community members to create annual Collective Voice reports.

Data is currently not shared in any format besides the reports.

Applying the learnings from the development of our Co-Priority Survey Data Visualisation tool, CKM has been working as part of the Collaboration for Mental Wealth in Moray Community Research Network (CRN) to create an interactive digital tool specifically for visualising Collective Voice data.

Why is data visualisation interesting to us?

It’s important to us that data that is developed by communities with lived (and living) experience:

  • Is communicated in a meaningful way that honours the process.

  • Is given back to communities in an accessible way which can be useful for others.

  • Can enable change by introducing alternative lenses and ways to engage for policy and decision makers.

the process so far…

  1. Development of the first version of the data visualisation prototype with a working group.

  2. In-person sharing of the first prototype to the wider Collaboration for Mental Wealth in Moray CRN.

  3. Refining the prototype to create the second version.

still to come…

  1. Online workshops where Moray community members, partners of the Collaboration for Mental Wealth in Moray CRN, and decision makers can share their feedback and ideas for the tool’s final stage of development.

  2. Implementing feedback and publically launching the data visualisation tool!

The data visualisation tool will be launched June 11, 2026 at our celebration event in Elgin, Moray where we will explore rights-based approaches in practice and lived/living experience as system intelligence.
